Deathknight. Blizzard’s first Hero Class for World of Warcraft.

From Blizzard:

The death knight combines martial prowess with dark, necromantic energies. Players might be familiar with the death knight from previously released Warcraft games — most recently, in the campaigns for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne expansion, the former paladin Arthas became a death knight and wreaked havoc across Azeroth and Northrend before fusing with the spirit of Ner’zhul to become the Lich King.

We haven’t yet made a final determination about which races can be death knights. However, the class will be available to both the Alliance and the Horde.

So which class can start over as Deathknight? Any?

I sure hope so. My Shaman is gimp. What a wonderful opportunity, with a little help from my friends, that I can make Blackhoof, currently a Shaman, a Deathknight. Then Msaker. Then Arcarius. Hmmm. Will we see enough Deathknights around? Shopping for reagents. Farming motes. Dancing on mailboxes. They’re going to be as common as Gnomes on the end of a kebab skewer.

Speaking of Orc BBQ, Gnome Deathknights? WTH?

Somewhere a lore writer is weeping heavy tears of infinite sadness.

Only problem is there will be sooooo many death knights. I know I will want to make one. I wish they were coming out with at least another Hero Class.

You know, I got to thinking about this whole new hero class thing… and while I think it’s an amazing idea that blizz is adding what is basically a prestige class to the game, I have to wonder what changes would take place if say…. a hunter became a Death Knight. Or a Mage became a Death Knight.

When any class opts to go Death Knight… do they all receive the same basic spells and abilities, or do they gain certain abilities based on the class they were before making the switch?

It seems pretty obvious that the Death Knight is more in keeping with a pally/warlock combo based on the lore, but I find it hard to reconcile that to an adaptation from other classes. What I’d really like to see are hero classes that identify with each already established class that would enhance each class’s existing abilities. For example… the hunter hero class would be, I dunno… Demon Hunter/Ranger? A mage’s hero class would be Spellsword/Psi Sorcerer? You know, something more similar to the D&D prestige classes, in that each is a more natural progression from the class you played before.

I think the idea of a hero class is great, but they should make it more D&D-reminiscent so it has a more personalized feel. It’s an idea that has a lot of potential… both for greatness and disaster. Depends on how Blizz decides to handle it.

You don’t ‘start over’ as a death knight; once any of your characters completes a certain end-game class, you make a new death knight in an empty character slot. You don’t lose any of your old characters. (Unless you have to delete one to open a character slot.)

After two years though, how many don’t have 10 spots taken?

They ought to give us 2 more spots, say, to allow for this.

Who’s going to want to delete character? Or pay to save the 10th by transferring them away?

It seems unlikely to me that there will be only one hero class in the release version. Hopefully there will be at least three (or more) covering the triad (tank / dps / healer). It would be stupid, IMO, to channel everyone into the same overpowered class — so I’m really curious about the implementation and the relationship to other classes.
